About Julie
Julie is a musician and teacher and her vast musical experience has covered class music and piano teaching in both primary and secondary schools, stage performance, choral singing, piano accompanying, choreographing and managing productions.
Cape Town, 2001 - 2012
Julie graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, specialising in Piano and Voice, and a Masters in Singing Performance. She was an active member of the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, playing the roles of Kate in Pirates of Penzance, Tessa in The Gondoliers, chorus and understudy to the role Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Carmen in Bizet’s opera Carmen, Buttercup in HMS Pinafore – The Musical, and Grace Farrell in Annie.
She also choreographed several high school and amateur dramatic musical productions and also produced and directed several Cabaret productions, including a special collaboration with her three sisters in a musical revue, The Harris Sisters – Together At Last (2011).
She was a Class Music Teacher at Herschel Girls High School, Cape Town, from 2006 – 2012.
In 2012, she released her debut CD album, ‘The Best of Stephen Sondheim’, which contain hit songs from Sondheim’s Broadway shows, such as Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music.
Oxford, 2012 – Present
Julie moved to the UK in 2012 with her husband and has spent the last decade specialising in piano teaching. She has been a member of the Curious Piano Teachers, which is an online global piano community, which supports teachers to pursue excellence in their teaching. She has completed The Voices Foundation Course, which trains teachers to deliver effective classroom music lessons.
In September 2016, Julie produced her own One-Woman show, A Night on Broadway. She performed it at St Andrews Church, North Oxford, in aid of their building project. Accompanied by George Francois on piano, she performed songs from well-known productions, such as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Sweeney Todd, Mary Poppins, Westside Story, Anything Goes.
Julie taught at The Dragon School, Oxford from 2012 and recently resigned this year to homeschool her son. She has taught Reception to Year 1 Class Music, run keyboard group practices for parents and children, and done piano accompaniments for the Pre-Prep dramatic productions.
Julie also runs a private teaching studio at home where she teaches 1:1 piano lessons (currently fully booked).
